Description Safety Engineer - Radio Communications Products. Primary Purpose of the Role - To be accountable the to Safety Manager for ensuring that all companies designs and products meet all appropriate safety requirements and current legislation, where relevant. To ensure that all product safety work carried out by Technical Authorities or other Engineering staff is regulated, audited and reviewed such that all designs and products can be verified, and where necessary certified, as safe to use for their intended purpose. Technical background/Qualifications - Strong Engineering background required – Degree or MEng or eqiv, Familiar with C E Marking., EMC, Low Voltage Directive. Certified Certification, Marking of the product, Safety, Documentation, Sign-off. Must be familiar with Safety Legislation Key Tasks - Product Safety - Take responsibility for the supervision and regulation of Product Safety work for engineering projects undertaken at the designated site or for other engineering projects as delegated by the Safety Manager. Ensure all formal safety documents supporting claims for Design Performance or Certification of Design are fully supported by traceable arguments and evidence. Act as the Chairperson for all Safety Committee meetings, HAZOPs and other formal meetings within the Safety Engineer’s area of responsibility, at the designated site. Act as the Signature Authority for all formal Safety Cases, Software Safety Cases, Safety Assessments and Reports, within the Safety Engineer’s area of responsibility, at the designated site. Product development and tenders - Provide expert contribution, guidance and consultancy to ensure safety is implemented in the emerging design of Prototypes, Technology Demonstrators and other funded development work. Ensure all that appropriate safety management actions are taken by the Technical Authority for emerging designs for Prototypes, Technology Demonstrators other funded development work. Provide expert contribution, guidance and consultancy to Bid Managers during the preparation of tenders with a safety requirement. Review responses to safety requirements in tenders. Review cost estimations for safety work in relation to safety requirements in tenders. Contracted Programmes - Provide expert contribution, guidance and consultancy to all staff engaged in safety engineering tasks for contracted programmes. Attend design reviews to ensure that all safety actions and information demanded by the Business Process, Codes of Practice and Customer requirements, are completed and traceable. Act as the “Safety Signature Authority” for completion of design reviews. Review all deliverable and non-deliverable safety documents created for the companies designs and products and act as the “Safety Signature Authority” for these all documents. Deputise for the Safety Manager as “Safety Signature Authority” for all formal Design Declarations and Safety Certifications. Engineering Safety Management System (SMS) - Manage the Engineering Safety Management System (SMS) at the Safety Engineer’s designated site and maintain best practice at that Site. Provide audit and review to ensure engineering staff are aware of, and operate to, the prescribed safety processes. Ensure the engineering aspects of the SMS remain compatible with Health and Safety Policy at the designated site.
