Description Research Engineer – Communication Systems Salary c £25K - £40K

A Systems R&D Engineer is required to identify and develop advanced technologies, system and product concepts that are relevant to our strategic aims in the overall field of Aircraft communication
Key tasks would include: • Carry out satellite communications system level studies applied to UAVs and other aircraft • Carry out satellite communications studies at the data networking level • Investigating and evaluating new communication technologies and system solutions for use on aircraft, in line with the company's advanced development programmes • Disseminating and exploiting the results of advanced development work within the rest of the company.
The successful Systems Engineer should have a good overall knowledge of satellite communications at physical layer, access layer, system level with some expertise in networking layers. Previous experience of the Aerospace Industry is not required
Essential Skills: Knowledge and experience of satellite communications and data networking, with good ability at critical reading and writing detailed technical reports.
Desirable Skills: A good selection of the skills listed below will be required. • Satellite Communication Systems (at L and Ku band) • Knowledge of UAV communications systems and concepts of operations • Ethernet networking and TCP/IP experience • Modem and Physical layer knowledge • Awareness of RF Power Amplifier techniques • Awareness of Antenna technologies • Ability to develop concept system and product architectures • Knowledge of the Inmarsat Satellite System & Service • Knowledge of GSM and 3G mobile communications concepts • Knowledge of Wi-Fi and WIMAX technologies • Experience of interfacing with third party organisations • Understanding of qualification requirements (EMC and Environmental) • Experience of working on UK or EU research projects • PC Literate: Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Visio
Useful Additional Skills • Knowledge of the integration and certification of systems on civil airliners (AIRBUS/BOEING) • Knowledge of airborne SATCOM standards such as ARINC 741, 761 & 781 • Knowledge of ACARS, ATN, and FANS • Previous experience of working with airworthiness organisations (EASA/CAA/FAA) • Knowledge of aircraft environmental requirements • Knowledge of operator aspects of avionic systems • Familiarity with Defence Standard, MIL-STDs and civil standards
Qualifications Required: • BSc or similar in Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering, or Systems Engineering. • An MSc with a satellite communications and/or data networking components would be advantageous. • A PhD with a satellite communications and/or data networking elements would be considered. A relevant PhD would contribute towards work experience. • Excellent English language ability.
Graduates with relevant degrees will be considered.
