Mechanical Design Engineer – Scientific Instruments
Oxford, Oxfordshire
£30,000 - £38,000 DOE
Our client is a niche high-tech company based in Oxford. Established over 20 years ago, they are now regarded as the world's leading manufacturer of low temperature instrumentation and software for X-ray diffraction. An opportunity has now arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team.
The role will involve:
- Designing components or complete instruments for cryogenic applications
- Critical evaluation of existing designs and recommendations for improvements
- Developing equipment specifications and Bill of Material data
- Working with suppliers to refine designs and simplify production
- Analysing quotations and making recommendations for supplier selection
To succeed as the Mechanical Design Engineer you will have:
- A bachelors or postgraduate degree (or equivalent) in a scientific or engineering subject e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical engineering
- Knowledge of principles of mechanical engineering, sources of engineering information, and practices of mechanical engineering drafting
You should also have knowledge or experience of at least one of the following:
- Principles of mathematics, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, fluid mechanics, machine design thermodynamics, strength of materials and electricity normally included in the field of mechanical engineering
- Principles of vacuum and cryogenics
- Finishing and coating methods including: honing, anodizing, powder coating, plating
Some experience of 3D design (CAD) software such as SolidEdge, SolidWorks or ProEngineer and drafting would be helpful but training could be provided.
